You Wanna save $ ?

April 21, 2007

Russ, this will drive em' nuts.

1. Eliminate either the "assistant" or "associate superintendent"
2. Eliminate Mustonen
3. Eliminate the Webmaster
4. Outsource Human Resource Administration (other districts have done this, saving on a Director AND a Supervisor of Human Resources)
5.50 percent pay cut for Board of Education
6.NO 1.6 million dollar improvement for athletics
7.Investigate possibility of selling Ten Eyck property and distributing offices there districtwide, hold Board meetings on a rotating schedule around the district
8.Consider eventual elimination or complete self sufficient (pay to play) athletics
9.No paid holiday time for non teaching employees (Christmas break).Must use vacation bank time to cover
10.Completely outsource custodial and food service and transportation
11. Next teachers contract 6 percent pay reduction
12. All other contracts 2 percent pay reduction along with elimination of health care coverage for NEW employees hired after contract ratification
date
13. New teachers hired after new contract ratification date to cover any increase in state required pension contributions.

Think about this..

April 21, 2007

Russ:

Last night as I was reading the flyer sent home with my kids from school. I had a few thoughts. The Flyer indicates that huge cuts are on the way and we should prepare for some real belt tightening in our district. We tighten the belt down low while the flab of a new football field and track at Fordson lops over the waistline of this top heavy school district.

The Dearborn School district has seen some incredible stupidity at the administrative level over the last few years. Why is it that our union can take a public stand on the war in Lebanon, but remains quiet when teacher’s jobs and benny's are being cut while we are spending millions on football fields?

Why doesn’t our district force a 100% pay to play? We are in the job of providing education in the wors economic times in Michigan history. We are sacrificing teachers and class room dollars and have 30 to 40 students to a class all to have football, baseball, wrestling, field hockey, track, golf, tennis and hockey. WHY? It has to stop! We are selling off assets to buy new football fields and lying off hundreds of teachers and cramming more and more into classroms. This is absolute insanity!

Why is the union supporting teachers who get caught violating the rules and are at the very top of the pay scale, while good, 1, 2 and 3 year teachers who don’t have tenure and are at the bottom of the pay scale get the ax? The union is WAY out of step with what is going on in Michigan and in our schools!

Why is it that most teachers at the top won’t give up a salary step or take higher co pays on health coverage to preserve fellow teacher jobs at the bottom? Most of them don’t live in Dearborn and could care less about the impact on our school system. This has to STOP!

Why all the damn vacations? Let’s keep the kids in school and shorten the school year! If kids want to take off their religous holiday, do it! Dont make EVERYONE take a week of two off! This would save us MILLIONS in payroll and utilities as well as non instructional dollars! Its not real world to send kids on a one week ot two vacation every two months! Let’s get with the times folks KEEP THE KIDS IN SCHOOL! Start showing them what its like in the real world!

Let me offer my reasoning and see what others think.

Our union has lost its way. They don’t have any idea what they are supposed to be doing and do not instill one shred of solidarity within the rank and file. How could they when we have seen example after example of the union protecting bums and openly having conflicts of interests by keeping bad teachers on the job while good teachers are pushed out the door every year. Our union supports teachers who break the rules because that has come to be the hallmark of our teachers union. The auto industry has been crippled by years of poor workmanship, ridicules wages and benefits adn fat administration. The school system is heading down the same road and the Union could care less! Its all about the big money grab and protecting failing instructors. Tenure has hog tied both administration and the union when it comes to disciplining poor or failing teachers and keeps poor instructors at the top of the pay scale on the job or even better, gets them promoted to TenEyke. Like the Electoral College and the Victrolla, Tenure is an idea whose time has passed and must go!

Teachers at the top of the pay scale have nothing to lose if everyone gives up a step. In other words, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. There is no sacrifice at the top and what about administration? Are they taking a cut in pay or even being asked to? We have a principal who makes about one hundred thousand dollars a year running a school that has failed AYP two straight years, and has openly renounced our own government to the media while taking vacations back to Lebanon to sweep up his house during the school year. I don’t think he’s going to take a pay cut to save teacher jobs.

Now the real issue. We should be employing teachers from out own community exclusively. It should be a requirement! If teachers do not have a vested interest in the community they live in, they have less motivation to maintain a quality, successful, solvent district. Teachers from outside Dearborn could care less about how devastating their poor performance is to our property values, our school system and our kids. Factor in that teachers from the same community they teach in would be far more likely to take concessions to preserve other teacher jobs because they are not just your co workers, they are your neighbors! I highly doubt that a teacher who lives in Franklin or Farmington Hills (which are FAR better funded districts than Dearborn) would be willing to take a pay or benefit concession to preserve a fellow Dearborn Schools teacher from losing his or her job. How could they?

Its time that teachers start giving back to the community they draw pay from and start serving the entire body as opposed to themselves. Balance this against the fact that the school board needs to stop wasting millions upon millions of dollars on moronic football fields and flat panel monitors and a ridiculously top heavy administration. When teachers see administration wasting millions of our tax payer dollars, they are not going to want to accept concessions.

In closing some of your respondents out here better get their heads out of their butts and start getting a clue about what’s going on our here. The Superintendent is playing chicken with our kid’s futures. These latest batches of cuts are nothing but a negotiating ploy as it is a contract year. Its time to line up and start telling this lame duck Superintendent and his mindless gutless drones of a school board to stop the BS and start working in the interests of the community, not their own bottom lines. Keep the good teachers in the class room and let’s ALL tighten the belt, not just ask those at the bottom to.

Is this true or false ?

Russ, You may have heard the uproar over the University of Minnesota constructing foot baths and prayer rooms for Muslim students. Those against this action are citing separation of church and state principles since the University of Minnesota is a state funded school and feel that any public finds should not be used for such purposes. Well, it's our turn now to be outraged. The University of Michigan Dearborn is planning on doing the same thing at its Fairlane Center Campus. Architects (Canadian architects at that) are now drawing up plans to convert restrooms and storage rooms to be used as foot baths and a prayer room. They have for some time provided a prayer room (they use the politically corrrect term "Reflection Room"). If a non-Muslim happens into the room when Muslim is using it, you get an evil eye and are asked to leave. By the way, this is the same campus that last year refused to dislpay a Christmas Tree in its lobby...or any other Christmas decoaration, stating it might offend a non-CHristian student. I am hoping that in bringing this to the public's attention (you are the first I have written to) it will bring about the same concerns that the citizens of Minnesota have. Please post this on your website so people know the two-faced and discrimitory practices used by ur state funded University of Michigan. By the way, I work at this facility, so please understand, I MUST remain anonymous

Don't pump gas on MAY 15th

April 30, 2007

In April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.

There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.

If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

If you agree (which I cant see why you wouldn't) resend this to all your contact list. With it saying, ''Don't pump gas on May 15th"

Artis wants contract extended

May 1, 2007

Well, well. As I've been saying for the last two weeks, Dearborn Superintendent of the Public Schools, John Burl Artis, has been recently acting nicy, nicy about town.
Artis has been glad-handing parents in front of Haigh School and showing up at the Dearborn Symphony's annual banquet.

Now, you want to know why John Burl Artis has shown the sudden interest in Dearborn, Michigan, a town in which he refuses to live in??? Well friends let me tell you why...

It's because he wants to extend his contract for another year.$$$$$

Remember I told you so, lets hope the School Board remembers his buyout package and says NO. So long John, it's been nice to know you.

More on Artis.

May 6, 2007

Dr. John Burl Artis teaches at UM-D because he needs it for his consulting business. As for the books he is writing, who cares. Bottom line is that this person has spent more time positioning himself for his retirement then he has leading the school district. We hired him because he looked good and presented himself as a culpable leader. The good news for those that have to listen to his leadership seminars, he has converted them to power point. It seems that he has a high school student that is working as an intern taking all his overheads and converting them to power point.

His website is http://www.artiscommunications.org/

WHY ?

May 7, 2007

Last week we had a student openly post a threat to do a Virginia Tech/Columbine style shooting at DHS. This threat came in the form of words carved on that student’s desk. The student was identified and what happened to him? NOTHING! Students in other districts are being expelled and prosecuted but DPS students who threaten terrorist acts are free to do it with impunity. Why isn't this student expelled and arrested like so many in other Michigan schools have been for doing the same thing? God forbid we risk a racial problem.

Schools Ditching Laptops

May 9, 2007

12:00AM on 5/9/07

Schools Ditching Laptops

The New York Times looks at why some schools are getting rid of their school-issued laptops. In addition to network clogs, maintenance issues and distractions to kids, there was this quote:

"After seven years, there was literally no evidence it had any impact on student achievement -- none," said Mark Lawson, the school board president here in Liverpool, one of the first districts in New York State to experiment with putting technology directly into students' hands. "The teachers were telling us when there's a one-to-one relationship between the student and the laptop, the box gets in the way. It's a distraction to the educational process."

Becoming Illegal (Actual letter from an Iowa resident and sent to his
senator a Democrat.

The Honorable Tom Harkin
731 Hart Senate Office Building
Phone (202) 224 3254 Washington DC, 20510

Dear Senator Harkin, As a native Iowan and excellent customer of the
Internal Revenue Service, I am writing to ask for your assistance. I have
contacted the Department of Homeland Security in an effort to determine the
process for becoming an illegal alien and they referred me to you.

My primary reason for wishing to change my status from U.S. Citizen to
illegal alien stems from the bill which was recently passed by the Senate
and for which you voted. If my understanding of this bill's provisions is
accurate, as an illegal alien who has been in the United States for five
years, all I need to do to become a citizen is to pay a $2,000 fine and
income taxes for three of the last five years. I know a good deal when I
see one and I am anxious to get the process started before everyone figures
it out.

Simply put, those of us who have been here legally have had to pay taxes
every year so I'm excited about the prospect of avoiding two years of taxes
in return for paying a $2,000 fine.
Is there any way that I can apply to be illegal retroactively? This would
yield an excellent result for me and my family because we paid heavy taxes
in 2004 and 2005.

Additionally, as an illegal alien I could begin using the local emergency
room as my primary health care provider. Once I have stopped paying
premiums for medical insurance, my accountant figures I could save almost
$10,000 a year.

Another benefit in gaining illegal status would be that my daughter would
receive preferential treatment relative to her law school applications, as
well as "in-state" tuition rates for many colleges throughout the United
States for my son.

Lastly, I understand that illegal status would relieve me of the burden of
renewing my driver's license and making those burdensome car insurance
premiums. This is very important to me given that I still have college age
children driving my car.

If you would provide me with an outline of the process to become illegal
(retroactively if possible) and copies of the necessary forms, I would be
most appreciative.

Thank you for your assistance.

Your Loyal Constituent, Donald Ruppert, Burlington, IA
