Interesting, I just returned to the Obama church site and clicked on becoming a member and it has been taken down. If my memory serves me correctly it said one must be an African American to join .

Russ, I think many democrats are concerned, me included, with the age old question of Bismarck and Napoleon. Our President is waging war more like a Napoleon; he's too overzealous and overextending his own military power and not paying attention to diplomatic nuance. Democrats like me want a more Bismarck styled campaign where we exercise restraint in our warmaking: only attacking the things which are critical to our offensive war on terror. Maybe it's worthy of note that Napoleon didn't do so well and Bismarck did. "Those with too much lust for power are overrun by it yet those who exercise restraint live to hold on to their success." For me, Russ, it's not a matter of war and peace. It's simply a matter of making war to create peace rather than making peace with war at no end.

Nuance diplomacy ??? How nuance is flying passenger jets into the Twin Towers. ? Get real Brian. Gee, you just killed 3000 innocent people! Please, lets talk about it. Brian you need help.

--by Anothe Brian on 1/7/08   Lives: Michigan

To Another Brian:

Do you really not understand that the war we are waged in in Iraq has nothing to do with the Twin Towers or 3,000 people dead on 9/11? Al Qaeda was not Iraq, bin Laden was not in Iraq, Saddam Hussein and the Baath Party had nothing to do with the attack on the Twin Towers, they had no weapons of mass destruction, and they posed no immediate threat to our great nation's safety or sovereignty.

The only reason there's an al Qaeda presence in Iraq today is because of our ham-handed commander-in-chief's lack of nuanced diplomacy. And as a result of our despicable occupation of Iraq, al Qaeda is stronger today than it was 7 years ago.

And why is it just because you don't agree with someone, you immediately assume they "need help?"

Karl. You must be kidding ? All of your points were wrong. Please start to read beyond the Detroit Free Press and the New York Times. Every one of your points were liberal "spinning" points.

Interesting comment about Gary W. and Tom Tafelski wanting to be Dearborn Mayor.I dont think either one has built any bridges with the Arabic Community. If Jack O Reilly decides he has had enough and doesnt run for another term, look for Dearborn to elect an Arabic Candidate.

Quite a number of interesting topics you covered in this latest rumination. I will comment on just two. First, I agree that Barak Obama's choice of the black-separatist church is very disturbing. The extreme ideas expressed by the pastor there are not what we want our President supporting. Second, another person who might benefit from criticism of Mayor O'Reilly and is also a good writer is Abed Hammoud. In his campaign against Mayor Guido he put ads in the paper (I have a copy of one) that claimed Guido put police snipers on top of the buildings around the end of the Memorial Day parade. He has told police officers during one of the many Middle-East protest marches down Schafer Road that 'when' he is Mayor, he will have a permanent 'marching lane' installed down the middle of the road. He was probably joking then, but is nakedly ambitious for the Mayor's job and apparently will say or do anything to gain it.

To Karl,

Your logic and information is flawed. Specifically, If Clinton had taken the high road and imprisoned Bin Laden, then the trade centers would not had happend. Clinton denounces what President Bush has done, because, he was to busy being the worlds police officer.

Never mind Somalia or Kosovo or any of the other peace keeping missions that we were stuck in over his 8 year term.

Suffice it to say, Freedom is not free.

Mr. Gibb, The master of word attacks in Dearborn is Doyne Jackson. For sure he is no fan of Mayor O'Reilly.

--by Ex Offical on 1/11/08   Lives: Dearborn

Doyne has been blamed for a lot of things and no doubt he is a wordsmith, but I doubt hes in the backround throwing potshots at the mayor. He has served his time in the City and for all we know is enjoying the warmth and sun far from Dearborn Michigan. In his carrer with the City Doyne was always given more power by political pundits than he had.

--by Goldsworth on 1/12/08   Lives: Dearborn

Quit sucking up to Big Jack. He's nothing like his father. He is too easy look whats going on with all the lawsuits, and he wants to settle with all of the people no matter what it costs the City, because he is lazy. Why don't you investigate on the local courts, and the police dpt., as well as human services.

--by Phillip on 1/13/08   Lives: Dearborn

Russ, I'm glad you are willing to give our new mayor Jack O'Reilly a fair hearing. As a city employee I can guarantee you that councilman Tafelski and his supporters are doing everything in their power to undermine the mayor.

--by watching on 1/13/08   Lives: Dearborn

Lazy? the only person that I ever heard call Mayor O'Reilly lazy, was Doyne Jackson. I don't even know if Mr. Jackson still lives in this city. But I would bet even money that is where this "Lazy" comment originated from. The only other persons that I ever heard call Jack O'Reilly lazy were councilmen Doug Thomas and councilman Tom Tafelski when he was thinking about running for mayor.

wait, so Ph.D means pile higher and deeper, but your buddy in the Oval Office has two degrees and it makes him a great leader? Please, the guy is incompetent. Wake up.

--by Peter on 1/15/08   Lives: Dearborn

Peter, You may want to go to the dictionary and look up the meaning of the preferred meaning of the word "great". Just a suggestion. Cheers.

From the website...There is more than one center from which to view the world. In the words of Dr. Janice Hale, “Difference does not mean deficience. It is from this vantage point that Black liberation theology speaks.

On the other subject- Karl and Brian(not another brian) speak of nuance, diplomacy and subtlety while the posters like anotherbrian represent the savage desire to beat someone up who is different. As does the current president.
